Spawns of Insomnia (2002)

We've been documenting local cartoonists for quite a while. Here are a few clips from Spawns of Insomnia produced by Ron Austin back in 2002. The Spawns event was sponsored by Cartoonists Northwest, and was a fairly early version of the popular 24-Hour Comics challenge made famous by Scott McCloud in the 1990s.

These clips feature artists Roberta Gregory, Mark Monlux, Donna Barr, Larry Lewis, Phil Foglio, John Lustig, Dan McConnell, and many others. Artists stayed up for 24 hours straight to write and draw a full-page comic. The video was a fun production produced back in the earlier days of digital video (only 12 years ago -but it seems like many technological decades have passed). The comic event took place June 2002 on Capitol Hill in Seattle.

Final Kickstarter Days!

Chelsea Baker Cartoon

A cartoon by Chelsea Baker about our film Bezango, WA. Chelsea interviewed Ron last week and then a drew full page cartoon for Olympia Power & Light, a newspaper serving the Olympia, Wa community.     BTW-even though Ron is the main one featured in the interview above, both he and Louise have been working as a team on the project for over two years.  If the KickStarter campaign is successful we can have it completed by early 2013.

Chelsea is featured in the film as one of the local artists. For over three years she has created a cartoon every day called: Daily Comics.

Donna Barr Interview

We've been fortunate to interview Donna Barr, Northwest native and creator of The Desert Peach, twice this year. Once in October of 2011, and again at the first annual 2012 Clallam Bay Comic Con in July. Below is a small section of the interview with Donna from last October.  In the movie we will feature more graphics of her work.

Not only is she one of the most talented, fastest artists in the Northwest, but her work is incredibly unique and considered ground-breaking in its field.

BTW-the San Diego State University Library established a special collections of the comic books created by Donna Barr, Roberta Gregory, along with other alternative comic artists. http://sdsulibrary.wordpress.com
